As soon as they have an interest, they should spend their money learning what it takes to get better at it. There’s terrific value in learning a skill, just about any skill. It builds confidence. It transfers. (Once they learn one skill, they’ll know how to learn another. And, at least as importantly, that they can learn another.). Furthermore, it’s fun. When you learn something and get good at it, it makes life happier and more fulfilling. It’s not exhilarating to put money away, but it builds discipline and teaches the importance of sacrificing immediate gratification in favor of a long-term reward.
