Director Christina Lazo, who’s also responsible for the fun and energetic choreography for the large ensemble, really plays up the period setting. Kelly James Tighe’s ever-changing set is dominated by pastel Mondrian patterns, and costumer Hope Birdwell clothes Birdie well in some memorably flashy Elvis-like outfits. Aside from the credible Elvis parody “One Last Kiss,” the songs are on the fluffy or schmaltzy side, delivered smoothly by the orchestra directed by Matt Smart and the large ensemble (despite some uneven audibility in Some More Sound’s miking on opening night). Probably the best known song to come out of the show is “Put on a Happy Face,” but among the catchiest is the griping parents’ lament “Kids,” sung with gusto by Kim’s family (including dynamic fifth-grader J.D. Cerruti as a little brother overeager to join the curmudgeonly older generation). Still, perhaps the most memorable ditty is also the one you’d most wish to get out of your head — the cloying teen girl squad anthem “We Love You Conrad.”.
