Director Christina Lazo, who’s also responsible for the fun and energetic choreography for the large ensemble, really plays up the period setting. Kelly James Tighe’s ever-changing set is dominated by pastel Mondrian patterns, and costumer Hope Birdwell clothes Birdie well in some memorably flashy Elvis-like outfits. Aside from the credible Elvis parody “One Last Kiss,” the songs are on the fluffy or schmaltzy side, delivered smoothly by the orchestra directed by Matt Smart and the large ensemble (despite some uneven audibility in Some More Sound’s miking on opening night). Probably the best known song to come out of the show is “Put on a Happy Face,” but among the catchiest is the griping parents’ lament “Kids,” sung with gusto by Kim’s family (including dynamic fifth-grader J.D. Cerruti as a little brother overeager to join the curmudgeonly older generation). Still, perhaps the most memorable ditty is also the one you’d most wish to get out of your head — the cloying teen girl squad anthem “We Love You Conrad.”.

Next month will have Valdez’s musical, “Corridos: The Remix” from Nov, 8-13 and Tandy Beal’s “Nutcracker”-inspired “Nutz RE-mixed” Nov, 18 through Dec, 4, But the real treat should be “The San Jose Nutcracker” from Dalia Rawson and the New Ballet School, running Dec, 16-24, The show takes the story we silver tone charm with enamel paint color -breast cancer, artist, ballet know so well but weaves in historical references to the Santa Clara Valley’s special heritage, You can keep track of everything going on at the theatre at www.sjsu.edu/hammertheatre..

Another key to Zero One’s growth was the organization’s ability to attract grants from private and federal sources, reducing its reliance on city funds. (It will receive just $62,500 from the Office of Cultural Affairs for this biennial.) In recent years, the festival has attracted major grants from the Knight Foundation (nearly $1 million), the Packard Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts and the Irvine Foundation. “They’ve been really good at “… capturing the attention of institutions, foundations and businesses in Silicon Valley that understand that the kind of innovation and invention involved in the biennial “… is very much what Silicon Valley is about,” said Goldstein.

Impressed by the way that the Smuin dancers threw themselves into “Cold Virtues,” Hougland eagerly accepted an invitation from Smuin Artistic Director Celia Fushille to create a new work for the company, He set “Ask Me,” a piece for 10 dancers (five women and five men) to a luscious score of songs drawn from “The Classic,” a recent album by indie singer-songwriter Joan Wasser (aka Joan as Police Woman), “Her writing is so beautiful, and a lot of the songs have these upbeat rhythms, but if silver tone charm with enamel paint color -breast cancer, artist, ballet you listen to what she’s saying she’s talking about shame,” said Hougland, an enviably prolific dancemaker who is principal choreographer for the Louisville Ballet..

The festivities included a performance by the school’s folkorico dance troupe and a showcase of other student activities. Of course, you can’t properly open a gym during March Madness without throwing in a little basketball. So a ritual “first shot” was taken in honor of B.J. Cassin, co-chair of Cristo Rey’s board of directors. It went in, of course, and that’s got to be good luck. GRAND OPENING FOR A GRAND BUILDING: The Palms restaurant has its grand opening planned Monday night in beautiful Coggeshall Mansion in Los Gatos. This is the latest eatery to occupy the historic manse on North Santa Cruz Avenue, following Palacio, Trevese and, of course, the beloved Chart House.
